Senior Downsizing: Fort Myers House to Bonita Springs Independent Living

The Fort Myers house is full. The independent living apartment or villa in Bonita Springs is not. That gap is the whole job — and it’s a different path than downsizing into a Naples high-rise condo.

Why Fort Myers → Bonita (or nearby IL) is its own move

A lot of families stay in Lee County on purpose. Mom or Dad leaves a Fort Myers house so the kids are still a short drive away, but the day-to-day footprint shrinks — less yard, less stairs, less “whole house to maintain.” Bonita Springs independent living, 55+, and villa-style communities sit on that Fort Myers → Bonita / Estero corridor. Close enough for Sunday dinner. Different rules than keeping the old house.

Independent living and villa campuses are not the same as a Naples tower condo. You’re often dealing with a community move-in window, a loading spot the community picks, and a floor plan that simply will not swallow a Fort Myers garage full of “maybe later.” We don’t invent any one community’s handbook — you ask your community what’s required. We show up as the licensed movers who get the household from house to new place on the day they give you.

Sort the Fort Myers house before you book the truck

Don’t pay to move a houseful of “we’ll figure it out later” into a smaller IL unit. Before you lock a date, walk the Fort Myers house and make three honest piles: goes to independent living, donate or family, haul-away. Measure doorways, closets, and wall space at the new place first (or get a solid video walk-through if you can’t get in yet). The dining set that “always fit” in Fort Myers may not clear the IL kitchen nook.

Medications, important documents, jewelry, and a first-night kit stay with the family — not on our truck. Pack what you’ll need the first night yourselves and keep it in the car.

What independent living move-in days change

House move day is usually “your driveway, your clock.” Independent living move-in day is often “the community’s window, their loading instructions, and tighter space than a suburban driveway.”

Ask the community early what’s required. Many want a certificate of insurance (COI) on file and a reserved move-in time window. Some have specific loading or service-entrance rules. We work with building management / the community on access when that’s part of the job; the family still owns the paperwork and reservations with the community. We work the window we’re given.

Packing vs labor-only on a senior downsize

Two common setups:

Full packing — We bring materials and pack the rooms that matter most on a downsize: kitchen, breakables, the stuff that breaks hearts when it cracks. Good when the Fort Myers house is still full and the family is already stretched.

Labor-only / you pack, we load — You supply boxes (or pack ahead); we load, haul, and unload. If you’re driving yourself with a rental truck or portable container, we can still load or unload — we don’t haul out of state.

What won’t fit: donate, family, haul-away

Independent living units do not take whole-house volume. That’s not a sales pitch — it’s the math. Sofas, duplicate dressers, garage tools, and “maybe the kids will want it” piles either go to family, get donated, or leave as a haul-away.

For paid haul-away, we estimate the work, then the landfill / transfer-station ticket is whatever they charge us — labor separate, ticket at cost. No invented prices here. Details: haul-away and junk removal.

Timeline that doesn’t rush a senior

Two to three weeks out: Walk both places (or get a detailed video of the IL unit). Start the three piles. Confirm move-in rules and windows with the community. Call us for a written estimate once you know roughly what goes.

Week before: Donations and family pickups leave the house. First-night kit is packed and stays with you. Re-check volume against the estimate so move day isn’t a surprise.

Move day: Empty the Fort Myers house in a sensible order. At the Bonita place, set bedroom, bath, and kitchen first so someone can sleep and make coffee without climbing a mountain of boxes.
