Moving a piano — especially a grand — in a Naples or Fort Myers condo is one of the highest-risk jobs in the moving industry. One wrong turn, one improvised strap, or one “we’ll be careful” attitude and you have thousands in damage plus a destroyed instrument.

I’ve moved hundreds of pianos personally over 15+ years across Pelican Bay high-rises, downtown Naples buildings with tight elevators, Marco Island waterfront homes, and single-story Estero ranch houses. This is not a service we farm out or treat casually.

Grand vs Upright: What Actually Changes

Upright Pianos (most common in SWFL homes)

  • Usually 300–500 lbs
  • Taller and narrower — easier to maneuver in many condos
  • Still require a proper board or skid for safe carrying
  • Can often be handled with 3–4 experienced movers

Grand Pianos (the real challenge)

  • 500–1,200+ lbs depending on size (baby grand to full concert)
  • Wide, awkward shape with legs that must be removed
  • Require a full piano board/skid + multiple heavy straps
  • Frequently need stair-climbing equipment or extra crew in condos
  • Lyre (pedal assembly) and music desk must be handled separately

We never treat a grand like “just a big piece of furniture.”

Equipment We Actually Use (No Shortcuts)

Most general movers show up with furniture blankets and a regular dolly. That’s not enough.

Our standard piano kit includes:

  • Professional piano boards/skids sized for grands and uprights
  • Heavy-duty ratchet straps (multiple per piano)
  • 3–4 layers of thick moving blankets per instrument
  • Floor runners and wall/door jamb protection
  • Stair climbers and additional leverage tools when vertical distance is involved
  • Custom crating supplies for delicate or vintage instruments

We also photograph the piano before we touch it and again at the new location.

Condo & High-Rise Specific Challenges in SWFL

Southwest Florida has unique conditions:

  • Elevator booking windows (many Pelican Bay and downtown buildings require 48–72 hour notice)
  • Narrow hallways and tight 90° turns common in 1980s–2000s condo construction
  • Humidity considerations — we keep instruments out of direct sun and rain even during short outdoor segments
  • HOA and building rules — padding requirements, time restrictions, and sometimes security escorts
  • Beach and barrier island access (Marco Island, Fort Myers Beach) — sand, salt air, and longer carries

We call ahead on every condo job and confirm logistics with the building before quoting final numbers.

The Real Process (What We Do Step-by-Step)

See the structured HowTo data embedded with this guide for the exact sequence we follow on every piano job. It is the same process we use whether the piano is going from a 3rd-floor walk-up in Fort Myers to a ground-floor home in Golden Gate Estates or from a 14th-floor Naples condo to another high-rise.

The key principles never change:

  1. Measure everything twice.
  2. Protect the instrument, the building, and the truck before any movement.
  3. Use the right equipment — never improvise.
  4. Communicate constantly between crew members.
  5. Take photos and walk through the final placement with you.

Insurance & Liability Reality

We carry full cargo and liability insurance on every job (see our About page for details and licensing). Pianos are high-value items. If something goes wrong, proper documentation and coverage matter.

We also strongly recommend you check your own homeowner’s or renter’s policy for any special musical instrument riders. We are happy to coordinate.

When to Book & What to Prepare

  • Book 2–4 weeks ahead during snowbird season for high-rises
  • Clear the path the day before (remove rugs, small furniture, pictures)
  • Have the exact final placement location decided
  • Let us know about any known damage or loose parts in advance
  • For grands: confirm whether you want the legs removed on-site or at destination

Common Questions We Hear

“Can you move my piano up or down stairs?”
Yes — with the right equipment and crew size. We assess the staircase first.

“Do you move player pianos or very old uprights?”
Yes, but we are extra cautious and may recommend additional crating or slower pacing.
